Inpatient RehabilitationLoss of independence is frightening and troublesome for many individuals and their families. A stroke, serious injury, hip fracture, joint replacement complicated by other health problems, and even a long illness can make it difficult to perform daily activities again. At Garden City Hospital, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is available for patients with a wide variety of conditions who need help regaining motion, strength, and independence.
Through the rehabilitation process, patients re-learn skills that enable each individual to do as much as possible for themselves as they continue to recover. Most patients admitted to the unit stay for at least two weeks, while some may stay one month or more.
The Unit's 18 private rooms are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, and gathering areas like the dining room and TV room, equipped with a 56-inch plasma television and Wii system, are designed to complement the rehabilitation process. (Click here to find out how patients at Garden City Hospital are using the Wii system to regain indepence.)

Rehabilitation Services The Garden City Hospital Rehabilitation Team highlights abilities, not disabilities. With staff assistance and encouragement, patients strive to do many activities on their own. Patients get up and dressed every morning and follow a busy schedule all day. Caregivers are invited to visit during therapy sessions to familiarize themselves with the various treatment programs.
Attending Physician A patient's attending physician is a specialist in physical medicine. This doctor will direct the total rehabilitation program. In addition, the hospital has a staff of internists, urologists, neurologists, orthopedists, and many other specialists who are available if medical problems arise.
Nutrition Well balanced, appetizing meals are an important part of rehabilitation. Meals are served in the unit’s dining room. Dining with other rehabilitation patients is an important part of the program.
Nursing Rehabilitation nurses will encourage patients to use all the skills they gain in the various therapies and apply them throughout their stays. These include eating, dressing, toileting and mobility, or moving about. Nursing staff foster independence around the clock, teaching patients and family members how to apply knowledge and skills in preparation for discharge back home. The nursing staff works to create an atmosphere of wellness on the rehabilitation unit, promoting the best possible health for each patient.
Rehabilitation Hospital Care When patients reach the Rehabilitation Unit, their medical condition has been stabilized and emphasis is put on how they can help themselves through the unit's team efforts. Care focuses on short- and long-term goals, which are directed by the attending physician. The doctor is supported by a team of professional rehabilitation specialists who determine current capabilities and monitor patient progress. The staff works closely with loved ones, who are essential members of this team.
Physical Therapy The physical therapist (PT) provides treatment based on an initial evaluation, which includes an assessment of pain, joint motion, muscle strength and the ability to move functionally. Staff help patients improve safety and independence when performing normal movement during activity. Based on individual needs, emphasis will be placed on bed mobility, transfers, gait training, stair climbing and balance. The physical therapist will works closely with patients and loved ones to provide education about safe and proper procedures for mobility.
Occupational Therapy The occupational therapist (OT) will teaches patients to achieve the highest level of independence and safety in routine daily activities. These include feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting, bathing and home management skills. The OT evaluates strength, coordination, sensation and ability to provide self-care, and designs a treatment program to meet each patient's unique needs. Safe and proper procedures for self-care are emphasized. The OT may recommend new techniques and assistive devices that can be used in performing daily activities.
Speech-Language Pathology The speech-language pathology department addresses understanding of speech, speaking, reading, writing, thinking, and memory skills needed for everyday activities such as phone use, banking skills and following directions. In addition, the speech language pathologist is trained to help with swallowing difficulty due to accident or illness.
Case Manager The goal of case management is the provision of quality and cost-effective healthcare services. Together with the rehabilitation team, the case manager organizes rehabilitation healthcare services to promote optimal outcomes for the patient. The case manager identifies potential challenges or complications in the rehabilitation process, establishes goals and care plans, and implements and evaluates the process.
Psychology Psychological stress following an injury or illness can become a serious problem which could interfere with rehabilitation and adjustment. A psychologist is available to help patients cope with this stress and assure rapid progress through the various stages of a rehabilitation program.
Social Services The rehabilitation social worker keeps patients and loved ones informed weekly of progress, goals, barriers to discharge and estimated length of stay. In addition, they will help examine possible discharge options and explore community resources. The social worker is available to help all involved as they cope with emotional and discharge planning issues that may result from accident or illness.
Therapeutic Recreation The therapeutic recreation specialist provides evaluation, treatment and counseling services to support patients as they become active members of their family and community once again. The therapeutic recreation specialist emphasizes leisure skills that incorporate everything learned in other therapies.
Audiology Audiology services are available to address hearing health needs. The hospital’s certified audiologist provides hearing testing and is licensed to provide hearing aids. The audiologist can also provide information about devices to make hearing easier at home, such as amplified telephones, pocket talkers (personal amplifiers) and TV listening systems.
